is there really a 2012 galactic alignment?

is there really a galactic alignment in 2012 that can cause anything? supposedly the sun and planets are going to line up across the milky way? if so what’s the effects?

This is a myth based on the irresponsible, (and repeated) airing of a ridiculous pseudo-documentary on the History Channel. That network, and the Discovery Channel and Fox, will air anything they feel will get a bigger audience. Sometimes, their shows are good and worth watching. Other times, they are foolish, sensationalist, tabloid-style hype. It is often difficult to tell which is which, unless you know about a subject. I know about the history of doomsday predictions, pseudoscience, and astronomy.

The Mayan calendar does not predict the end of the world. They did keep an accurate calendar, but contrary to popular opinion, never predicted any world event accurately. They couldn’t predict their own demise; why should they be able to predict ours?
The alignment with the galactic center is not going to happen. It comes fairly close to happening EVERY year on Dec 21, and will be exactly the same as it always is, in 2012. Even if some perfect alignment did occur, there is nothing about it that could affect the earth. It’s like saying, “When these three parking spaces are occupied by three red cars, the world will come to an end.”

Doomsday prophets have always been around and they are always wrong. Every 5 to 10 years, some prediction catches the public’s attention and scares a lot of kids…usually thanks to irresponsible media decisions. Dozens of different doomsday scenarios have been piggy-backed on to this date since the show aired. Go to this site to see how many predicted apocalypses we have already missed.

All that Nibiru stuff is bunk, too. No such planet has ever been discovered. The claim that it was discovered some 25 years ago is not true.

Galactic alignment is an invention by a bunch of crackpots in order to conjure up some sort of ‘event’ for 2012. Since they seem unable to provide a concise definition, we’ll have to try and guess what they mean.
Could it be the Sun aligning with the centre of the Milky Way galaxy? Well, no because the centre of the Milky Way is not in the plane of the Earth’s orbit, so the Sun can never line up with it.
Could they mean the Sun crossing the equator of the Milky Way? The Sun does a complete circuit of the sky every year and therefore appears in line with the Milky Way in June and December every year. So that can’t be right.
What about the once in 26,000 year alignment of the solstice point with the galactic equator? Nope, that took place in 1998.
All the preceding are merely line-of-sight effects as seen from the earth’s perspective. An observer on Mars would see something completely different. Some of the cranks have become confused and decided that galactic alignment must be something to do with the revolution of the whole solar system around the galaxy, taking 225 million years. During this orbit, the solar system bobs up and down a few times and measurements taken from the Hipparcos satellite reveal that the solar system is currently moving away from the central plane of the galaxy and won’t pass through it for another 30 million years or so. That can’t be what they mean then.
So we have: 1) Can’t ever happen 2) Happens every year 3) Happened in 1998 or 4) Won’t happen for 30 million years.
    Take your pick.

  3. Doc89891 says:

Across the milky way? Never Happen. The solar system is in the plane of the galaxy. One would have to physically move the solar system out of the galaxy and lay it across the galactic disk above or below the galactic center. Such an impossible feat would be far more hazardous than a simple positional alignment which would have no effect at all

  4. starryskyn says:

There may or may not be some kind of alignment somewhere in the Milky Way galaxy. But it has nothing to do with Earth, Sun, solar system planets, 2012 or any effects we won’t experience here.
    Stop reading garbage by frauds.
    Lay off the whacky tobaccy.

  5. Episteme Enti says:

You are a victim of the 2012 hoax.

Galactic alignment is one of the hoax scenarios. It has no basis in truth. The alignment will be a visual one as seen from Earth only. Not a physical alignment. This visual alignment happens twice per year every year.

It is persons who hype the 2012 hoax who have deceived the gullable and low educated by promoting and parroting this false disinformation. Less educated and gullable persons simply assume that this is a physical alignment because they do not take the time to research the phenomenon.

In scientific truth, our Sun is above the galactic plane by 50 light years. It did physically cross that plane 6 million years ago. It will cross the plane again in 27 million years.

The Sun and planets will not line up. This can easily be disproven by going to NASA jpl and view the planetary positions for the entire 2012 year. A planetary line up will not even be close.

    No effects.

    2012 is a hoax.

It has been determined mathematically that the planets will NEVER line up. There was some hype in 1983 called the Jupiter effect which was also promoted as a doomsday hoax. Nothing happened.

  6. Tina L says:

    you kidding?

the “alignment” is very approximate (6 degrees off), happens twice a year, and cannot possibly cause anything to happen.

you have just failed the internet gullibility test.

  7. Raymond says:

    No.

    There is no Galactic alignment.
The Galactic centre (where the black hole is located) is at declination 29 degrees South (declinations are like latitudes, but on the celestial sphere); the Sun can never appear to be further south than 23.5 degrees South. So, at the closest, the Sun still misses by a whopping 5.5 degrees.

And that happens every year, around Dec. 21.

    A bit of terminology:
The Milky Way is a band of light that we see in the night sky (when there is no light pollution) and it represents the light from millions of stars in two portions of spiral arms in our Galaxy. Since the Milky Way is not parallel to the ecliptic (the apparent yearly path of the Sun) nor to the zodiac (the apparent corridor for the orbit of the planets), they cannot line up with the Milky Way.

In fact, there is no special line up at all (with or without the Milky Way) in 2012. Alignments of a few planets do occur on occasion, and nothing special happens (except in astrology, where horoscopes get all mixed up — as if that made any difference in reality).
But 2012 is actually a poor year for alignments.

  8. Albert E. says:

As to the Sun being in the center of the Galaxy, that it impossible; the Sun and solar system will always remain at about 30,000 light years from the galactic center. The universe is in constant expansion. Dec.12th every year produces a very similar effect.
The inherent distance between each planet has no effect on the other…please, don’t toy with my theory of physics !!
    (Relativity is my passion…)

What everyone needs to understand is that a good part of this hoax is fueled by the same idiots that made millions over the Y2K theory and then bailed out in the dot.bomb era. They then went on to lead major corporations and World banks to again take advantage of lost souls in 2008. Obviously, they need another plan to execute in 4 years to maintain their lifestyle … let’s just get on with our lives and be happy !!
(this is a great world, and we can all make a difference to make it even better…)
